Berberine May Ease AIDS Related Diarrhea

Berberine is an "... excellent candidate for the treatment of the chronic diarrhea which often afflicts AIDS patients," Dr. Diane M. Schneider, PRM Pharmaceuticals and colleagues reported.

Berberine is a plant alkaloid and "... has been used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including diarrhea from protozoal, fungal, and bacterial infections," Schneider explained at the 36th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 15-18, 1996. The results of clinical trials in India indicated this compound is safe and effective against many gastrointestinal pathogens, she continued.
