Designer Protein Combats HIV Replication

An experimental and unique method of blocking HIV replication may lead to a class of drugs that fight the virus.

The technique, which has so far been tested only in cultured human cells, relies on gene therapy with a non-working virus protein to "vaccinate" HIV infection-prone cells, according to a report in the October 15, 1996, issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 1996;93:11477-11481).
