Woman Sentenced Under New HIV Law

A judge said he had no choice but to sentence a Toledo woman to six months in jail under a new state law aimed at getting HIV infected prostitutes off of streets.

The woman pleaded for leniency from Judge Mark Schmollinger of Lucas County Common Pleas Court. "I feel like I'm at the bottom of a well," the 34-year-old woman told Schmollinger. "All I want to do is go home with my husband and child."

She paused for a moment and wiped her tear-filled eyes with a tissue. "That's all I want," she whispered. "That's all I want."
