According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 38th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology, held December 6-10, 1996, in Orlando, Florida, "A photochemical treatment (PCT) process has been developed to inactivate pathogens in platelet concentrates (PC). To establish inactivation efficiency, the level of pathogen inactivation was measured. For viruses such as HIV and CMV, cell culture assays were performed. Because there are no cell culture assays for HBV and HCV, we relied on surrogate assays.
