Expert Forecasts AIDS Epidemic

Half a million Russians could be infected over the next two years with HIV, the Interfax news agency quoted the head of an agency set up to combat the disease as saying.

The forecast, made by Professor Vadim Pokrovsky, Russian Scientific Systematic Center for Prevention and the Fight Against AIDS, represents an explosive epidemic in a country where registered cases of HIV number little more than 2,000--twice as many as a year ago. Povkrovsky, who called on parliament to approve an anti-AIDS program, estimated that the current actual number of HIV patients, including those not registered, was around 10,000.
