Superantigens Speed AIDS

Bacterial superantigens appear to speed progression to AIDS in monkeys.

The findings suggest that the dynamics of HIV infection become more complex when other infectious agents enter the picture. They provide support for aggressive prevention and treatment of bacterial infections in people living with HIV.

The monkey studies by Zheng W. Chen of Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues showed that inoculation with a defined superantigen caused a wildly exaggerated CD8+ T-lymphocyte response in most animals with persistent SIV infection.
