Walter R. Dowdle of the Task Force for Child Survival and Development, Atlanta, Georgia, and Maureen E. Birmingham of the WHO Global Program for Vaccines and Immunization, Geneva, Switzerland, pointed to epidemiologic and virologic evidence that this conclusion is valid.
"Polio eradication through immunization is evidenced by the documented absence of poliomyelitis in an increasing number of countries and the progressive disappearance of poliovirus genotypes," they wrote.
