Circumcision Doesn't Protect Against STDs

A new study questions the belief that circumcised men are less likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease, finding that in some cases the chance of getting STDs could be greater.

In a study published in the April 2, 1997, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers at the University of Chicago found no evidence that circumcision protected against STDs.

Edward Laumann, a professor of sociology and co-author of the study, said it casts doubt on previous theories that circumcised men were less likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease.
