Officials Report Drop In AIDS Deaths - Figures Disputed

A government report said that thanks to new drug therapy, the number of AIDS deaths in France fell by more than half in 1996. But an AIDS activist group disputed the figures.

The Health Ministry reported a 60 percent drop in the mortality rate among AIDS patients receiving regular medical attention. "These results can be looked at in relation to the different therapies that appeared in 1996," health officials said.

Officials also said that over the same period of time, significantly fewer people in France passed from being HIV positive to having advanced AIDS. The activist group Act Up, however, called the report "manipulation" and contended the...
