Patients Seek More Funds For Costly AIDS Drugs

The new AIDS drugs are prolonging lives but the U.S. federal and state governments have to do more to make sure all patients get access to them, patients, doctors, and activists say.

The AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) working group estimated that the cost for the next fiscal year would be more than $500 million for the states and the federal government.

To cover that, states have to contribute an extra $46 million and the federal government has to budget an extra $132 million beyond the current $167 million level.
