"HHV8 and Kaposi's Sarcoma in HIV Seronegative Italian Patients DNA Detection in KS Lesions, Uninvolved Skin and Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 97th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 4-8, 1997, in Miami Beach, Florida, "Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a multicentric neoplasm affecting mainly but not exclusively the skin. Chang et al. have identified a new human herpesvirus, referred as KSHV or HHV8, in AIDS-KS lesions. Subsequently, HHV8 sequences have been found almost all KS lesions from all forms of KS (classic, iatrogenic, endemic) and, with lower frequency, in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of KS patients, suggesting that this new virus could implicated in the pathogenesis of KS.
