MAC-Related Respiratory Disease Linked to Hot Tubs

Five cases of respiratory illness have been linked to the transmission of Mycobacterium avium complex via a hot tub.

"Five healthy people developed respiratory illnesses characterized by bronchitis, fever, and 'flu-like' symptoms after using a hot tub," researcher John Embil and colleagues wrote ("Pulmonary Illness Associated with Exposure to Mycobacterium avium Complex in Hot Tub Water," Chest, March 1997;111(3):813-816). "Acute exacerbations of their illness developed within hours of heavy use of the hot tubs."
