Individuals with long-term asymptomatic HIV infection have persistent HIV specific cytotoxic lymphocyte (CTL) responses (see AIDS Weekly, February 6, 1995), and a preponderance of evidence suggests that the cellular arm of the immune response is crucial for control of the virus.
CTL from at least one recipient of a candidate HIV vaccine can recognize nearly all known viral strains, according to Kent J. Wienhold of Duke University, Durham, North Carolina.
