Lower Turnout For France's Annual Anti-AIDS March

Thousands of people recently marched in French cities to urge help for AIDS patients, but turnout was lower than in 1996 following medical progress against the epidemic.

"Let's take a new step against AIDS," banners proclaimed in the fourth annual "March for Life" in France, the European nation hardest hit by AIDS.

Organizers estimated that 10,000 people joined the colorful rally in Paris with dancers and music, half the number who took part in 1996. Smaller rallies were held in five other cities, partly timed to remind politicians of the disease on the eve of France's National Assembly election.
