"Detection of Human Herpesvirus 8 DNA in Broncho-Alveolar Lavage Fluid From HIV Infected Patients With and Without Pulmonary Kaposi's Sarcoma."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 1st National AIDS Malignancy Conference, held April 28-30, 1997, in Bethesda, Maryland, "At present, diagnosis of pulmonary KS is by bronchoscopic visualization of pulmonary lesions. As lesions may not always be readily visible, an additional diagnostic test would be of use. HHV8 DNA has previously been found by our group in the bronchoalveolar (BAL) fluid of patients with pulmonary KS. HHV8 DNA prevalence in the BAL fluid of 68 HIV infected individuals was determined, and the diagnostic and predictive value of such detection was evaluated.
