South Asia Urged To Act To Fight Spread of HIV

Health experts and officials from South Asia, facing an alarming growth in AIDS cases, opened a meeting to coordinate efforts with the international community to combat the disease.

Participants attending a two-day regional meeting in Kathmandu, Nepal on HIV and AIDS drew up a plan of action to combat AIDS in South Asia, organizers said. "Our aim is to get on doing very pragmatic things before AIDS becomes an overwhelming problem in the region," said a spokeswoman for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

UNAIDS said South Asia and Southeast Asia had 5.3 million HIV positive people, or about 20 percent of the world's estimated...
