According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Keystone Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology entitled AIDS Pathogenesis, sponsored by Abbott Laboratories and the Director's Sponsor Fund, held April 8-13, 1997, in Keystone, Colorado, "Disulfide compounds inactivate HIV infectivity by reacting with nucleocapsid protein retroviral zinc finger domains. One such compound, aldrithiol-2 (2,2'-Dipyridyl disulfide) has good solubility properties, and is relatively non-toxic. Primary isolates or laboratory strains of HIV-1 were treated with Aldrithiol-2 (1 hour, 37(degree)C). Residual infectivity was titrated on human PBMC PHA blasts.
