A whole blood assay for the diagnosis of bovine TB recently was developed that overcame many of the shortcomings associated with tuberculin skin test (TST). The assay is based on the incubation of whole blood with purified protein derivative and the subsequent measurement of interferon (IFN)-gamma released from PPD-reactive T cells in infected animals.
