Progress in Settlement for HIV Infected Hemophiliacs

A settlement between some 6,000 HIV infected hemophiliacs and the makers of tainted blood-clotting products is progressing again now that two appeals have been resolved, a lawyer for the plaintiffs said.

That means the $100,000 payments to each individual could still begin this summer, said attorney David Shrager. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lawyer is heading the decade-long battle for compensation by hemophiliacs infected with HIV from products meant to allow their blood to clot normally (see July 7, 1997 AIDS Weekly Plus and Blood Weekly issues).
