HIV Tests by Israeli Army Upset Ethiopian Jews

The Israeli army acknowledged on August 21, 1997, that it routinely tests Ethiopian Jewish draftees for HIV without their knowledge, angering community leaders who accused the military of being devious.

Brigadier-General Ari Eldad, the chief army medical officer, confirmed to Israel's army radio that blood tests are given to black Jews of Ethiopian origins and to avowed homosexuals as part of their medical exams ahead of conscription at age 18.

"There is no issue of discrimination or relating negatively to any sort of group here. We relate to risk groups," Eldad insisted in response to the report first published in the newspaper Yedioth...
