Risky Sex, STDs, Condom and Drug Use Affect Risk for Straight Couples

In the nation's largest and longest study of heterosexual HIV transmission, University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) researchers found that the practice of anal sex, lack of condom use, injection drug use, and the presence of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) are the strongest predictors of infection.

The UCSF researchers also found that male-to-female transmission rates continue to remain extremely low, about nine out of every 10,000 unprotected sexual encounters, and even lower for female-to-male infections.
