Cross-Border Sex Raises AIDS Alarm in Hong Kong

Cross-border sex is posing a serious AIDS risk in Hong Kong, where thousands of men have been crossing into mainland China and having unprotected sex with prostitutes, a survey by AIDS workers showed.

One in three men who visited mainland prostitutes admitted to not using condoms, according to the survey. And three-quarters of those who had unprotected sex admitted they did not use a condom with their wives afterwards.

Hong Kong reverted to Chinese sovereignty on July 1, 1997, after 156 years of British colonial rule, but a tightly controlled internal border remains in place.
