Prisons Fight Growing Epidemic

Behind the bars of Texas prisons lies a culture of rampant sex and unchecked drug use that has created a fertile AIDS breeding ground, extending beyond prison walls and into the cities, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

In a copyright story in its September 14, 1997 editions, the Express-News reported that the disease now ranks as the leading killer in the Texas prison system, killing 475 inmates since 1992.

In 1990, AIDS deaths started to surpass those from cancer and heart disease, prompting the state to open separate prison wards to treat infected men and women.
