"A Novel Mycobacterium Isolated from a Man with AIDS."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 18th Annual Congress of the European Society of Mycobacteriology, held June 17-18, 1997, in Cordoba, Spain, and to the 2nd International Symposium on Mycobacteria of Clinical Interest, held June 19-20, 1997, in Cordoba, Spain, "A novel mycobacterial species was isolated from blood of a 34-year-old man with advanced AIDS (CD4 cells <10/(mu)L). He presented with high fevers, nausea, and postural hypotension. Hypoadrenalism was confirmed by short synacthen test. Antimycobacterial treatment for suspected disseminated M. avium complex (MAC) infection was declined, and he died one month later. Blood was collected in BACTEC...
