"Cloning and Expression of the Dihydrofolate Reductase Gene from Mycobacterium avium."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Mycobacterium avium presents a major threat to individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). To develop new drugs for M. avium, we have initiated studies to evaluate potential inhibitors of mycobacterial dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). DHFR is a key enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of folates that are necessary for DNA, RNA and protein synthesis. This enzyme represents a strategic target because of the ability to develop selective inhibitors that can be more active against mycobacterial DHFR than mammalian DHFR. To...
