A Brief History of HIV and Hemophiliacs

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates there are about 13,000 people with hemophilia in the United States.

Approximately half that number were infected with HIV through blood-clotting factor between 1978 and 1985.

There are at least 2,702 people with hemophilia infected with HIV, according to December 1996 CDC figures. At least 3,229 hemophiliacs have died of AIDS.

"These are all underestimates," said Sally Crudder, director of the CDC's Hemophilia Treatment Center Program.
