According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is the most common neoplasm in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Epidemiologic evidence and the recent identification of herpesvirus-like DNA sequences in cases of KS have suggested a role for viral agents in the etiopathogenesis of this disease. It is unclear if these sequences are present in all types of KS and if the copy number of these sequences has correlation with disease severity (staging).
