Government Budget Cuts Reduce Supply of Free Condoms

Thailand's economic crisis has affected the fight against AIDS, forcing budget cuts for everything from World AIDS Day observances to the free supply of condoms for prostitutes.

The government budget for condoms for prostitutes has been slashed to 15 million baht (US$375,000) from a proposed 65 million baht (US$1.6 million), said Chawalit Tantinimitkul, head of planning at the Public Health Ministry's AIDS division.

Government financing for aid agencies dealing with AIDS has been slashed by a third to 60 million baht (US$1.5 million).
