Lawsuit Fears, Cash Crunch Hit AIDS Vaccine Hunt

The hunt for an AIDS vaccine has been hit by fears of lawsuits and a perception in the drug industry that it might not see a return on its investment, the head of the United Nation AIDS (UNAIDS) group said.

Peter Piot, UNAIDS director, said that it was important to stimulate basic research and he welcomed calls for an AIDS therapy solidarity fund.

"It is striking how underfunded basic research is," he said. "Companies worry that, if they find an expensive vaccine, they will have to give it away for free to developing countries."
