"Isolation of HIV-1 Specific and Platelet-Crossreactive Antibodies from HIV-1 Infected Thrombocytopenic Hemophiliacs."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 39th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology, held December 5-9, 1997, in San Diego, California, "Thrombocytopenia is a common complication in HIV-1 infection. At the early stages of infection, HIV-1 related thrombocytopenia is mainly due to antiplatelet antibodies and immune-mediated platelet destruction. At the later stages of HIV disease, thrombocytopenia is primarily due to defective thrombopoeisis associated with HIV infection of megakaryocytes.
