New York Advocates Oppose Identifying HIV Cases By Name

The Gay Men's Health Crisis (GHMC), New York, New York, asserted that while it favors expanding monitoring to include HIV infected people, it opposes identifying them by name.

"There can be no compromise in people's privacy," said Ronald Johnson, GMHC. "A name-based system clearly jeopardizes the confidentiality and privacy of individuals."

Johnson spoke at a news conference in which a number of advocacy groups urged that a state advisory group reject the idea of reporting people with HIV by name and recommend that the state adopt a system using a code, or so-called unique identifier.
