New AIDS Cases in 1997 Shows Steady Figures Since 1994

The number of new AIDS cases in Nebraska in 1997 was 91, which keeps 1997 figures on about an even basis with annual reports since 1994.

State HIV/AIDS surveillance coordinator Tina Brubaker said there were 101 new cases reported in 1996, but the figures have ranged from about 90 to 100 since 1994.

According to Nebraska Health and Human Services System figures, the 1997 cases involved no new cases in infants or children younger than 13. There were two such cases in 1996.

The figures showed 34 percent of the 1997 cases involved people of color, up from 32 percent in 1996 and 27 percent in 1995. There were 17 women involved in...
