Baltimore: "Something Else" Key to AIDS Vaccine

An as-yet-unknown component of antiviral immunity appears to be the key to an AIDS vaccine, said Nobel laureate David Baltimore, head of the U.S. HIV Vaccine Research Advisory Committee.

Baltimore delivered the keynote lecture opening the 5th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, held February 1-5, 1998, in Chicago, Illinois.

The only experimental vaccine capable of inducing complete immunity in the SIV/monkey model of HIV disease is a live, attenuated virus. It is crucial to find out how a live vaccine offers such uniquely effective protection, Baltimore said, so that a safer vaccine can be developed.
