Lamivudine Resistance Differs in HIV+ and HBV+

Lamivudine resistance patterns differ among those given the agent for hepatitis B virus and those taking it for HIV infection.

Researchers found that resistance tends to develop much slower in hepatitis B virus (HBV) positive patients.

"In HIV-1, resistance to lamivudine is usually observed within a few weeks," Hubert G.M. Niesters and colleagues from The Netherlands' University Hospital Rotterdam wrote ("Identification of More Than One Mutation in the Hepatitis B Virus Polymerase Gene Arising During Prolonged Lamivudine Treatment," Journal of Infectious Diseases, May 1998;177:1382-1385).
