According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Sixth European Conference on Clinical Aspects and Treatment of HIV Infection, held October 11-15, 1997, in Hamburg, Germany, "Background of Study: HIV infection has been associated with increased rates of single- and multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB in Western countries. The emergence of MDR TB among patients with HIV infection has raised concern because of nosocomial outbreaks, high resistance to treatment, and high mortality rate.
