Long-Term Remission Achieved without Ongoing Suppressive Therapy

For some patients with healed cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, it may be safe to temporarily discontinue suppressive therapy.

"Our observations suggest that for selected patients with healed CMV retinitis who have immunologic and virologic evidence of a clinical response to HAART [highly active antiretroviral therapy], temporary discontinuation of chronic, CMV-suppressive therapy may not result in further retinal necrosis," wrote C.
