According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the American Thoracic Society, 1998 International Conference, held April 25-29, 1998, in Chicago, Illinois, "Cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonitis is associated with a high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. The diagnosis of CMV pneumonitis is based on fever, respiratory symptoms, infiltrates on chest X-ray and detection of CMV in BAL fluid and/or a typical histological pattern. However, CMV is often found in BAL of immunocompromised patients without signs of pneumonitis.
