Better Prevention Could Halve HIV in Poor Nations

A prevention program costing the equivalent of one percent of the U.S. defence budget could halve the number of new infections of HIV in the developing world, an American researcher said.

Stephen Morin, University of California, reported at the 12th International AIDS Conference, held in Geneva, Switzerland, June 28 - July 3, 1998, that a package of low-cost measures could put a dent in the spread of the epidemic in the developing world.

Every five seconds one person is infected with HIV. Experts predict 40 million people will be infected by 2000.
