UCLA Now Testing New Treatment For AIDS and Lymphoma

The University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Jonsson Cancer Center has begun an experimental treatment for patients with HIV related non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The high-dose chemotherapy treatment could prolong survival and help strengthen the immune system.

Dr. Rafael Amado, who heads the Cancer Center team administering the treatment, said eligible patients must be infected with the AIDS virus and have HIV related lymphoma that is responsive to chemotherapy.

Before they receive the high-dose chemotherapy, patients are treated with a standard dose of chemotherapy. They then are given a hormone to stimulate growth of their stem cells, primitive...
