Prisons' AIDS Costs Soar

The numbers of HIV infected inmates in Iowa's prison system is on the rise, but the rate of ill patients is staying steady, the state's top prison doctor said.

Dr. Paul Loeffelholz, Iowa Department of Corrections, said an estimated 30 to 40 inmates in the state's prison system have HIV. Overall, there are about 7,500 inmates in Iowa prisons.

The number of Iowa inmates with HIV or AIDS is on the rise, Loeffelholz said. In 1997, 18 infected inmates entered the system. In 1991, the number was 10.
