Human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8) or Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV), is a gamma herpes virus with sequence homology to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). HHV-8 was first isolated from Kaposi's sarcoma tumor cells and subsequently from tumor cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with primary effusion lymphomas (PEL; or body cavity-based lymphomas).
