500 Newborns Infected with HIV Each Year in Vietnam

An estimated 500 Vietnamese newborns are infected each year with HIV, a sign of how quickly it is spreading, the Thanh Nien newspaper reported.

The English-language daily quoted a National AIDS Committee report, issued at a two-day national conference, as saying 3,500 new infections were detected in 1998, bringing the number of HIV/AIDS cases to 11,681.

The committee estimates that the actual figure may be 10 times bigger.

The number of people with advanced AIDS is 2,231, and 1,180 people have died since the first case was detected in 1990.
