K. Nagai and colleagues from Yokohama, Japan's Saiseikai Yokohama-shi Nanbu Hospital report a case of simultaneous infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV-1 in a 26-year-old Japanese homosexual man.
"He was admitted to our hospital for acute hepatitis caused by HBV," they wrote ("Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy Used to Treat Concurrent Hepatitis B and HIV Infections," Journal of Gastroenterology, April 1999;34(2):275-28).
"At that time, HIV-1 antibody (Ab) was not detected in his serum. ...
