AIDS Cocktails Help Immune System Rebuild

In addition to reducing the amount of the virus in the body, AIDS cocktails enable the immune system to rebuild itself, helping AIDS patients fight HIV and other diseases, according to University of Minnesota researchers in Minneapolis.

A study led by the University of Minnesota's Dr. Zhi-Qiang Zhang and Dr. Ashley Haase found that even when pummeled by HIV for years, key elements of the immune system not only regenerate but flourish when the amount of HIV in the body is reduced by the drugs.

As recently as five years ago, researchers thought that once HIV had destroyed the immune system, it was gone forever.
