"CCR5 Antagonists Inhibit HIV-1 Infection of huPBL-SCID Mice, but Select CXCR4-Using Variants at Suboptimal Concentrations."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Keystone Symposia HIV Vaccine Development: Opportunities and Challenges and AIDS Pathogenesis, held January 7-13, 1999, in Keystone, Colorado, "N-terminal modifications of RANTES with higher in vitro inhibitory activity ... than native RANTES have been tested for inhibition of R5 HIV-1 infection in the hu-PBLSCID model. Aminooxypentane (AOP)-RANTES and nnonanoyl (NNY)-RANTES were evaluated. AOP-RANTES substantially reduced virus levels when administered to hu-PBL-SCID mice just prior to virus infection and continuously for the ensuing week, but did not block infection or select for co-receptor escape mutants.
