According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Fourth European Conference on Experimental AIDS Research, held June 18-21, 1999 in Tampere, Finland, "The emergence of drug resistance HIV-1 in the peripheral blood of patients on long-term nucleoside inhibitor monotherapy is well documented. However, there is limited knowledge of the distribution of drug-resistant variants in other anatomical sites such as the brain. To investigate the prevalence of drug-resistant mutations, HIV-1 DNA was amplified from post-mortem brain (10 regions), spinal cord, and lymph node tissue of 10 individuals who had received either long-term monotherapy or combination therapy of nucleoside analogues...
