Study Shows Honolulu, Hawaii, Reducing Rate of AIDS Cases

Honolulu, Hawaii, has been doing a good job fighting AIDS. A study of the top 100 cities in the U.S. by the National Public Health and Hospital Institute found Honolulu's rates of AIDS cases has dropped to one of the 10 lowest in the nation. Local officials say part of that success comes from the city's aggressive but controversial needle exchange program. The study found a 38 percent decline in the number of reported AIDS cases in urban Honolulu from 1985 through 1996.
