Vitex Files To Commence Trials of New "Universal" Plasma

V.I. Technologies, Inc., Melville, New York, announced that the company has filed an Investigational New Drug (IND) amendment with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to commence trials of a new version of PLAS+SD which removes the antibodies that cause plasma to be blood-type specific. PLAS+SD is a transfusion plasma product that uses Vitex's solvent detergent process to remove lipid enveloped viruses including HIV, hepatitis C, and hepatitis B. Today, all plasma must be typed before it is administered to a patient.
