According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 10th Symposium on HIV Infection, held June 17-19, 1999, in Toulon, France, "Highly active antiretroviral therapy in established disease has proven to be efficient at restoring, at least partially, CD4 T-cell homeostasis and responses to opportunistic pathogens. The CD4 T-cell responses against HIV are, however, not restored except at time of primary infection, and currently represent a new surrogate marker for immune reconstitution.
