Thousands in the Americas Infected by Tainted Blood

Thousands of blood donations contaminated by the AIDS virus and hepatitis make their way into blood banks in the Americas each year, infecting thousands of people with the deadly diseases, a leading expert on safe blood told health ministers meeting in early October in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Only 16 of the 35 member states of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) screen all their blood samples for hepatitis and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, Dr. Jose Ramiro Cruz said.

He spoke at PAHO's annual conference, where health ministers planning regional policy are being urged to take measures to ensure a safe bloody supply throughout the Americas. ...
